Researching Educational Ecologies of Feminist Photography
Research questions: How visual literacy (ability of reading/producing pictures) has been thought as a major pedagogical and emancipatory issue? How can feminists create different images of their issues/bodies/movements in a male-dominated visual world? What kind of pictures and histories can they transmit to new generations to make the collective practices and ideas change?
Axes:
(Re-)Education of the Gaze
Educational dimension of feminism: how to transmit/teach/make happen the will of social changes
Combining present needs (radicality with the past) and institutionalization (make another future possible)
Visual Strategies Combining Esthetics and Politics
Constructing counter-visualities (Mirzoeff): choices btw. collective or individuals, pacifying or struggling, empathy orspectacularity, idealized vs. reel, unified vs. contradictory
Tension between professional/activist skills: pressure on seriousness & spectacularity (staged/spontaneous photography)
Cartographic memories for the present and the futures
Community need to materialize/celebrate/fix the past, grass-roots aspiration for better futures
Artistic bricolage (Levi-Strauss, 1962) between archive and fiction, history and memory, sources and silences
